Vancouver: The City of Rain?
Vancouver has a reputation for constant, unrelenting rain. It’s not uncommon for residents to experience over one month without sunshine, particularly during the winter months. Is the weather truly as bad as the stereotype?
It Only Rains Half the Year
Vancouver’s climate is classified by overarchingly mild temperatures and consistent rain throughout the year. This includes an average temperature range between a low of 3 degrees in the winter and a high around 22 degrees in the summer.
Despite the implications otherwise, Vancouver only experiences just over 160 days of rainfall each year. Though it doesn’t feel like it when you’re in the middle of the rainy season, over half of the time, it’s not raining in Vancouver. The majority of rainfall happens between October and March.
Visit in the Summer
In the summer, Vancouver becomes one of the driest cities in Canada. It is not uncommon for the city to experience drought conditions in these warmer months when the low-pressure systems of rainy winter leave. Some years, residents will have 5 to 6 weeks without feeling a drop of rain during the summertime.
Weather Variety
Micro-climates help to make the weather even more tolerable, but it’s actually not the rain that’s negative for Vancouver weather. It’s the lack of sun for weeks—or months—on end. Luckily, micro-climates surround the city and provide potentials for variety and respite. Particularly in pockets south of the town, you can find spots that are warmer and drier than the town itself or other surrounding areas. When it comes to Vancouver, if you don’t fancy the weather where you are, just walk a few miles in any direction. for example it may be rainy in North Vancouver but not in Tsawwassen or it may be raining in Shaugnessy area but not at Kits beach.
Much like the abundant choices of restaurants, neighborhood cultures, and outdoor activities, Vancouver weather has a little bit for everyone. Despite the grey cloud that hangs over the city half the year that can be seen as a negative aspect of this beautiful city, Vancouver ranks as the third most sustainable city in North America, and is working towards making that number higher.
