How are cities ranked for walkability?

To determine the walkability of a city, Walk Score, a Seattle-based company, averages the following criteria for homes in a given city:

• The variety and distance of paths from homes to amenities
• The population density of the area
• The length of blocks and the number of intersections

From this data, each city is given a walk score. High walk scores indicate locations in which daily errands and commutes can be done quickly, efficiently, and safely without a car. Low walk scores require vehicles for almost every journey away from home.

Vancouver consistently scores exceptionally high.

Specifically, Vancouver’s most recent score is 78/100, falling into the “very walkable” category. With this ranking, it becomes the eighth most walkable city in North America, behind New York City, Jersey City, San Francisco, Boston, Newark, Miami, and Philadelphia and the highest in Canada.

Vancouver continues to become more walkable every year.

According to walk score data, people in Vancouver can be at an average of eight bars, coffee shops, or restaurants within five minutes on foot from their home or apartment.
