The Downsides of Vancouver

Nothing is perfect. No person, object, or place can live up to that claim. Certainly not the city of Vancouver. While Vancouver has the characteristics everyone raves about, like the breathtaking views everywhere you look or the bustling international culture, it also has its dark side. The parts that make residents crazy and tourists unhappy.

It’s expensive

Like many big cities, the cost of living in Vancouver continues to skyrocket. In fact, it tied with Toronto as the most expensive city in Canada in 2018. This is not the city to call home without some financial stability—and, unfortunately, that stability is hard to create.

There aren’t enough well-paying jobs

Despite the booming economy and seemingly constant development, Vancouver’s economic growth does not trickle down to every corner of the job market. The available jobs require degrees and experience.

The work positions that are available quickly become competitive and often don’t pay wages that can live up to the costly demands of Vancouver life. Yet, somehow, low salaries and a bleak job market is not stopping people from making a move anyway.

Too many people call Vancouver home

To say that Vancouver is crowded is an understatement. Even with a giant urban park, expansive outdoor areas, and attempts at developing a city that’s easy to navigate, these efforts and characteristics fall short.

As a result of too many people in cars trying to get around town, traffic is horrendous most days, making travel times miserable. A robust public transportation system does exist but doesn’t seem to help calm down the roads.

Unless you’re doing exceptionally well financially, don’t expect the luxury of coming home to an empty house after your stressful commute. Multiple roommates fill tiny spaces to combat both the astronomical rents and lack of available housing.

Despite all these downsides, though, Vancouver can still be a great place to live. If you find your joy in the outdoors, have a solid career, love the multi-culturalism Vancouver has to offer, and appreciate walking to your neighbourhood establishments instead of driving across town, then you may be very happy in Vancouver.

Downtown Eastside home to city’s impoverished and mentally ill

Metro Vancouver has a homeless population of approximately 2,181 people. Of those roughly 659 of those are in Vancouver, and many of those seem to congregate in the city Downtown Eastside. Many of these people struggle with mental illness, and drug addiction as well as problems finding long term employment. Most are on income assistance and some on disability but even still don’t have enough to secure housing. The rising rents and unaffordability of Vancouver is a huge contribution to this growing problem.
