China in Vancouver: Chinese Influences in BC
Vancouver is overarchingly a multicultural city. With strong influences from around the world, particularly Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, it is a mixing pot of cultures, colours, languages, and energies. Over 40 percent of the city’s population are immigrants.
Of this significant immigrant population, Vancouver is also home to the largest Asian community of any city in North America. The majority of these Asian residents come from China. Chinese culture creates much of the particular heart that makes Vancouver, BC the city it is today. From favourite foods to cultural hubs and shopping centers, the Chinese influence is prevalent, distinct, and healthy.
Shaping a culinary landscape
Vancouver’s food scene is primarily influenced by its proximity to the fresh fish from the Pacific Ocean. A close second is Chinese cooking. Sushi is the favourite local food with a similar abundance of popular Ramen restaurants.
Vancouver chefs and restaurants have taken these traditional meals and made them their own, unique iterations. However, the heart of these favourite foods is still very Chinese. Even typically western alcoholic beverages such as craft beer, have been adding in asian inspired ingredients and appealing more to the Chinese market. Find out more about the craft beer culture in Vancouver and it’s many influences.
No tiny Chinatown
Chinese immigration to the western coast began with the development of the railroad and mining systems in the early 1800s. As families began to join the workers, the Chinatown neighbourhood multiplied. Today, Vancouver Chinatown is the third largest traditional Chinese cultural district in North America.
Shopping in Chinese
There are shopping centers with Chinese-language signs, Chinese-speaking employees, and China-influenced objects as a city mainstay. Malls and shopping centers catering entirely to Chinese and other Asian populations have existed in Vancouver since the 1980s. Chinese merchandise is sold by employees speaking Chinese under Chinese signs.
Even after these cultural pockets received pushback from English speakers in the area throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, they remain a vital, stable presence in the region.
