Common Household Items You Don’t Have to Throw Away

Reducing, reusing, and recycling are just some of the most effective means we could all save our planet from the growing problem regarding garbage, pollution, and global warming.

While in Vancouver, recycling is strongly supported by the government, it will always be better to find ways of reusing items rather than throwing them away.

But then, do you know what would be better than reducing, reusing, and recycling? Not having to throw some items away in the first place.

Sometimes, when we have items sitting in our home for a year or so, we automatically assume that they have gone bad or have expired without even checking them. As a result, we may be throwing away some items we could still use. We might be adding to the worsening waste problem we are already facing. Even though we strive to send all recyclables to Vancouver recycling depots, sometimes, saving these items would be the best move.

It’s a good thing that not all items you have in your home could go bad. Here are some household things that surprisingly have no expiration:

Powdered Milk – One of the advantages of powdered milk over liquid milk is its longevity. Powdered milk would be safe to be consumed even after years of being stored. However, there may be some changes to its consistency and texture.

Sugar – Sugar, when stored properly in an airtight container and away from extreme temperatures, would not go bad. While it would be safe for sugar to be consumed even after years, make sure that you don’t expose it to moisture to prevent it from turning rock hard.

Salt – Just like sugar, salt won’t go bad. And just like sugar, salt must be stored properly for it to be perfectly usable. If you truly want to have your salt-preserved, store it in the container you purchased it with.

Pure honey – Natural honey doesn’t expire because of its special properties that don’t facilitate the growth of bacteria.

White Rice – White rice could last in your storage for an indefinite length of time. Unfortunately, this is not the same for brown rice. Brown rice could last for just a maximum of eight months due to its oil contents.

Even though most of these household things are made up of food or ingredients, it could still be pleasing to find out that there are still some items you don’t have to throw away.
